Got questions about dental-check-ups?

Your questions answered

How regularly should I see the dentist?

It’s common to visit every six months, but your dentist may recommend a different schedule depending on your oral health.

What does a routine check-up involve?

Your dentist examines your teeth, gums and mouth for signs of decay, gum disease or wear and gives advice on care and diet.

Does my child need regular check-ups?

Yes – early visits help children develop good oral hygiene habits and allow us to intervene before problems develop.

I’m nervous about seeing the dentist – can you help?

We understand anxiety and provide a calm, supportive environment. We’ll explain each step and go at your pace; you can learn more about our team on the our team page.

Will my check-up include a clean?

Many patients choose to combine a check-up and hygiene visit for comprehensive care. Details are on our dental fees page.

Why should I see a dentist when pregnant?

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect your gums and teeth. Regular visits help prevent and manage issues like pregnancy gingivitis, pregnancy granulomas, dry mouth and erosion.

Why bring children to the dentist early?

Early visits help ensure children don’t develop untreated decay and build a positive attitude towards dentistry.

What preventive treatments are available for kids?

Fluoride treatments and tooth-coloured sealants protect growing teeth. We can also spot early bite issues and address them sooner rather than later.

Why is a dental check-up important during pregnancy?

Pregnancy can be an exciting time and while you have so much to plan for, your oral health may be one of the last things you’re thinking about. However, it’s particularly important to pay close attention to your teeth and gums at this time. Here are some reasons why pregnant women should take extra care with their dentition:

  • The hormone progesterone can be raised up to 10 times higher than the normal level in the body during pregnancy, affecting its response to toxins and making it more susceptible to developing periodontal disease, also known as pregnancy gingivitis.
  • Some pregnant women also develop a growth on their gums known as a pregnancy granuloma: red nodules, usually found on the upper gums. While they are not dangerous, they can cause discomfort.
  • Other oral health problems may include dry mouth and tooth erosion as a result of constant exposure to acid from severe morning sickness.

If you are pregnant we recommend that you come to the practice for a thorough check up so that we can help you to have a healthy and happy pregnancy.

  • Healthy gums during pregnancy.
  • Improved health during pregnancy, which also improves the health of your unborn baby.

Why are regular dental check-ups important for children?

As dental professionals we believe in preventative dental care and encourage our patients to bring their children to the practice from an early age. Regular check-ups from a young age will ensure children don't suffer from untreated dental decay with devastating effects to their growing dentition.

There are a number of preventative treatments that our team can provide for children:

  • Fluoride applications are a safe and effective way to safeguard your child's growing teeth from developing decay. The fluoride is painted onto the surface of the teeth, helping to mineralise them.
  • Tooth-coloured fissure sealants are applied to the biting surfaces of children's teeth to prevent decay.

Studies have shown that the younger your child is when attending their first dental appointment, even if just for a check-up, the more likely they are to have a positive experience and to grow up unafraid of the dentist. Our team will take special care of your child to make them feel safe and cared for.
