Snoring affecting your sleep or your partner’s?

A dental approach to quieter, more restful nights

Snoring can disrupt your sleep, strain your relationship and leave you feeling drained during the day. Often the cause lies in how the lower jaw relaxes while you sleep, narrowing the airway. At Thornton Dental & Implant Centre we provide dental options to encourage better airflow at night. A custom-made oral appliance may help lessen snoring and improve sleep quality.

How your jaw and airway influence snoring

Understanding what happens at night

During sleep, the muscles in your jaw and mouth relax. For some people the lower jaw falls back slightly, narrowing the airway. As air passes through it causes the tissues to vibrate and create the sound of snoring. In some cases snoring is a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea; if we suspect this we’ll recommend further medical assessment.

What is a dental crown?

Restoring and strengthening damaged teeth

A crown is a form of dental restoration that replaces the part of your tooth that is damaged or broken. For example, if you have a particularly large or deep filling or a piece of tooth has broken off, we will create a crown to replace and restore the tooth in line with your other teeth.

Other uses for crowns include:
To improve the appearance of discoloured fillings by replacing them with a crown.
To protect or cap a restored tooth following root canal treatment so you can bite down and eat as normal.
To anchor a bridge or dental implant to keep it firmly in place.
To cover up a chipped or broken tooth.
Frequently asked questions about snoring

Your snoring questions answered

How can a dentist help with snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea?

Do you or your partner suffer from breathing difficulties during sleep such as snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea? You might be pleased to know that dentistry may have a solution for you. A variety of oral devices or mouthpieces are now available that will address your snoring problems. By preventing the lower jaw from dropping back during sleep, these devices can prevent the closure of your airways, which will stop you from snoring. Your dentist can fit one of these for you.

Here is how the treatment works:

  • A custom-made mouthpiece is made from impressions taken of your teeth to ensure they fit you comfortably.
  • Made from a hard-wearing plastic, the mouthpiece is worn at night and works by holding the bottom jaw in a slightly forward position.
  • This position opens up your airway significantly, allowing you to breathe better and as a result sleep better too.

Will the appliance be comfortable to wear?

Because it is custom-made for your teeth, the appliance is designed to be comfortable when worn overnight.

Will a dental device cure snoring?

The device can reduce snoring for many people, but results vary. We’ll discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.

What if I have sleep apnoea?

If there’s a chance you have obstructive sleep apnoea, we’ll recommend a medical assessment before providing a dental device.

Do I need a referral to see you?

No. You can book directly for an initial snoring assessment.

How do these oral appliances work?

The device sits over your teeth and gently brings your lower jaw forward, which opens your airway and reduces the vibrations that cause snoring.

Are there any side effects?

Some people experience temporary jaw stiffness or mild discomfort, but this usually settles as you get used to the appliance.
